Installing vCenter 5.0

 

Mount the install iso and launch the autorun.exe from the disk drive.

 

Ensure the pre-requisites are installed

  • dotNet 3.5 Sp1
  • Windows Installer 4.5

 

 

Launch the vCenter server installation:

Note:

  • If you wish to run vCenter services on a domain account, Login to the vCenter server (windows box) with the service account.

 

 

if you own a license key, Now is a good time to enter this, else leave this blank to use in Eval mode.

If you already have a SQL server on the environment, Ensure the ODBC drivers are installed and create a DSN to the SQL server.  Else, leave this to the default to install SQL express 2008

Note:

  • express instance has a 4GB database size limitation.
  • admin privileges on the SQL instance are granted to the account used at the time of install.

 

If you wish to set services¬† domain account, you must be logged into the box with the service account and then uncheck the “use system account”

Specific custom directories (if you wish to install to different drive/partition)

If this is the first vCenter on the environment, leave this to a standalone instance.

Should you have an existing vCenter deployed and wish to add the two to the same view on vSphere client, then you could select the second option to setup the vCenter on linked mode.
this can also be done at a later stage after the install.

specific custom ports (if any)

Ports to be used by inventory service

Select Deployment size

Begin the install.

During the install:

 

 

installing web client: (not very useful on this release)

 

 

 

Open browser and head on over to https://vCenterserver-FQDN:9443

 

Note: vCenter 5.0 does not have a single sign on. the account used at the time of install by default has the administrative privileges. you may review the vpx_access table on the vCenter database to review which account has permissions to log on to the application..

 

 

Assigning license:

Log in to the vCenter instance using the C# client.

launch go home>Licensing

 

Add in your serial key (host and vCenter) and label and then click on add license keys

Upon successful validation, it should look like the below:

Depp ending on the asset that is being licensed (vCenter/Esxi) select the respective and choose the appropriate license keys

 

Confirm changes and hit finish when done.
